I can't believe ...

It has been over a year since I've written anything on Astro. A lot has happended in that time period. In October we got a lead on a job in Eugene, Oregon managing a 49-room motel. The owner lives in L.A. and he flew us out for an interview. We spent the week with Jonathan and Amanda and had a great time. We were there for Halloween and went to a party ... we probably embarassed them but we were having one of the best time of our lives, or at least it seemed like it.

We were staying at Dan's and David was driving to Brandon once a week to buy groceries for his parents. His mother became ill and stayed in the hospital for a month. She asked David and I to stay with them and help them. We decided that we would live there and make that our home. But Dad just got way too out of hand and we realized in June that it wouldn't work. We went back to Dan's and by then I expanded my job search outside the Fruitland Park area. Daniel had decided by then that "he has seen us enought to last him ten years." LOL ... don't blame him at all. I think I was applying for about 80 jobs a day all over the country. Almost went to Craig, Colorado ... but we were really not keen about going back to sub-zero, 6-month-long winters and David reminded me how he had not been able to breathe when we visited there in 2008. Also, had a chance at a job on the beach above Jacksonville. That would have been a HUGE mistake.

My best friend from childhood, Debbie Brown Nevels, passed away from Cancer. That was a shocker.

Kenny and Pam became grand-parents for the first time (and Regina again.)

Jonathan and Amanda visited us for the holidays. That was really nice. We had a great time with them.

But now, here we are, in Eugene, Oregon and loving it. It is really a nice place here. Lots of rain, for sure.

In current events ... wow, what a year. Lots of unemployment, homelessness, major earthquakes, volcano eruptions, floods ... even in Nashville, tornados ... tore up Yazoo City, oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, more bank bailouts, health care reform passed, immigration and border issues explode out of hand, new supreme court justice nominated, more miners killed in WV, One Korea supposedly blew up a ship/sub of the other Korea and that area is heating up, as well as, new talk of Iran invasion.

Where's it all headed. Hmmmmm ... my prediction is:

Fighting will start up in regard to Korea. Market will crash so that Obama will lose (he accomplished the goal of health care reform .. in time for the next pandemic flu outbreak which I'm sure will be more deadly now that the cards are all in place) ... Republicans get back in and go after Iran (and Alaska oil) ... After a short time, Korea will end tensions with reunification. After a NWO regime is installed in Iran, regions will start developing stronger ties and the 3 unions will grow stronger and more solid. Russia, Japan, China, Korea, Australia and other Asian/Pacific areas will form the "Asian Union" with power based in China, which will join the "American Union" and the "European Union."

There will be many changes, some will happen faster than others, but eventually the U.S.A. will be different ... it will either be America or it will be 5 regions as states of America.

Dire predictions, but the technological advances are going to be phenomenal.

If I, and other Wave analyst are correct, Richard Russell had it right when he said that most investors would not recognize the United States by the end of the year. I hope he is wrong and common sense comes back to our leaders in the White House and Congress but so far it does not look good. Since the economy is now more of a global one, the events in Europe and elsewhere are mainly out of our control thus making the problem more complex.

Suggestions for the Acute Management of a H5N1 Pandemic, by Spencer Feldman

The H5N1 (Asian Avian Flu or "Bird Flu") virus owes its lethality to its ability to instigate pathological immune responses in the host via cytokine storm. This leads to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and massive infiltration of inflammatory cells into the lungs. Thus, any H5N1 protocol must take into consideration, not only the inhibition of the virus, but also the effects of DIC and alveolar flooding.

Given that there are reports of some patients dying within three hours of initial symptoms, any medical response must be swift and aggressive. Traditional models for treatment outside of a hospital setting rely upon antiviral medications. This is insufficient as there are now strains of the H5N1 that are resistant to all major antiviral drugs, and furthermore does nothing to address the issues of DIC and alveolar flooding.

Alternative models concentrate on immune stimulating products. This is a dangerous idea as it is the strength of the immune response that makes the H5N1 so deadly. Increasing immune response may prevent an initial infection, but in an infection that has already taken hold, it will only worsen the outcome.

Preventative Measures: Studies suggest that Vitamin E and Selenium may decrease the infectivity and pathogenicity of the H5N1 Avian Influenza(1).

Additionally, air pollutants have shown to increase the risk of contracting the H5N1 Avian Influenza(2). Raising glutathione, a primary detoxification pathway for petrochemicals may be of benefit. Finally, strengthening capillary walls may be suggested in preparation for a possible hemorrhagic episode.

Acute Management: Current scientific thought holds that the lethality of the H5N1 Avian Influenza may be caused by systemic viral dissemination, cytokine storm and/or alveolar flooding(3). As such, an intelligent protocol for supporting the body would be to take these factors into consideration. The H5N1 Avian Influenza contains the compounds Hemagglutinin and Neuraminidase (also called sialidase). Both of these compounds are required in the infection cycle of certain virus. The drugs Zanamivir and Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) are both Neuraminidase inhibitors.

One study suggests that the common Chinese Herb Astragalus may also be a Neuraminidase inhibitor(4). Since another study(5) suggests that Ca2+ and Mag2+ both speed up the activity of neuraminidase, and that Ca2+ is required for its function, making these elements unavailable via chelation with sodium and potassium citrate may be of use.

Studies also suggest that Lactoferrin(6), sulfated polysaccharides such as Ceramium Rubrum(7) (Red Marine Algae) and Elderberries(8) may be Hemagglutinin inhibitors. Unfortunately, Elderberry also increases cytokines (see above) especially Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNFa)(9) which is specifically associated with the toxicity of the H5N1 Avian Influenza (10). For this reason, ingredients that studies suggest normalize TNFa such as Curcumin and Vitamin E (11),(12) should be considered.

One outcome of a cytokine storm can be disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). DIC may be responsible for the massive hemorrhaging seen with the H5N1 Avian Influenza(13). Thus, in addition to supporting normal cytokine levels, supporting the body in normalizing blood coagulation parameters with nutritional compounds may also be suggested(14),(15),(16). The drugs Amantadine and Rimantadine work by inhibiting the matrix protein(s). Studies indicate that Glutathione and Resveratrol may have an effect on matrix proteins as well(17), (18). Finally, Lactoferrin may support the body in decreasing infiltration into the lungs of inflammatory cells(19).

Emergency Solution While I have already manufactured a product that contains all of the ingredients listed, the FDA does not allow for commercial sale alternative products to be made (other than homeopathics) for the bird flu.

The following ingredients should be available locally and might form the basis of a makeshift H5N1 survival pack.

1- Curry powder as a source of turmeric to suppress TNFa

2- Red wine with the alcohol boiled off as a source of resveratrol

3- Kelp as a hemagglutinin inhibitor

4- Astragalus as a neuraminidase inhibitor (available at any Chinese herb shop)

5- Vitamin E as a blood thinner (available at any health food store) Conclusions

Reports of people dying from the H5N1 Influenza in as little as three hours from the first signs of infection suggest the necessity of carrying on one’s person whatever they consider an adequate defense against this infection.

To recap, In designing such a defense, the key factors to address regarding the H5N1 virus would be:

1- Decreasing the risk of initial infection

2- Decreasing the potential virulence of infection

3- Inhibiting Hemagglutinin

4- Inhibiting Neuraminidase

5- Inhibiting Matrix proteins

6- Binding of viral receptor sites

6- Reduction of calcium and magnesium

7- Decreasing general inflammatory cytokines

8- Decreasing TNF-a in particular

9- Supporting normal platelet activity

10- Decreasing free radical activity in the lungs

11- Minimizing hemorrhage

12- Strengthening blood vessels

13- Protecting against the after effect of hemorrhage

14- Replenishing electrolytes lost to diarrhea

15- Inhibiting secondary infections

China's gender gap could turn dangerous, study warns

BEIJING - China has 32 million more young men than young women — a gender gap that could lead to increasing crime — because parents facing strict birth limits abort female fetuses to have a son, a study released today said.

The imbalance is expected to steadily worsen among people of childbearing age over the next two decades and could trigger a slew of social problems, including a possible spike in crime by young men unable to find female partners, said an author of the report published in the BMJ, formerly known as the British Medical Journal.

"If you've got highly sexed young men, there is a concern that they will all get together and, with high levels of testosterone, there may be a real risk, that they will go out and commit crimes," said Therese Hesketh, a lecturer at the Centre for International Health and Development at University College London. She did not specify what kinds of crimes.

The study said analysis of China's 2005 census data extrapolated that males under age 20 exceeded their female counterparts by a whopping 32 million.

The study found that China has 119 male births for every 100 girls, compared with 107 to 100 for industrialized countries.

"Nothing can be done now to prevent this imminent generation of excess men," said the report by Hesketh and two professors from eastern China's Zhejiang province.

The study found that the biggest boy-girl gaps are in the 1 to 4-year-old group — meaning that China will have to grapple with the effects of that imbalance when those children reach reproductive age in 15 to 20 years.

It seemed that any day that started out with clear blue skies and with a clear forecast would bring out the planes which would continue spraying in the criss-cross pattern above us until the sky was completely overcast and the sun was entirely blocked out.

At G20, Kremlin to Pitch New Currency

The Kremlin published its priorities Monday for an upcoming meeting of the G20, calling for the creation of a supranational reserve currency to be issued by international institutions as part of a reform of the global financial system. The International Monetary Fund should investigate the possible creation of a new reserve currency, widening the list of reserve currencies or using its already existing Special Drawing Rights, or SDRs, as a "superreserve currency accepted by the whole of the international community," the Kremlin said in a statement issued on its web site. The SDR is an international reserve asset, created by the IMF in 1969 to supplement the existing official reserves of member countries. The Kremlin has persistently criticized the dollar's status as the dominant global reserve currency and has lowered its own dollar holdings in the last few years. Both President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have repeatedly called for the ruble to be used as a regional reserve currency, although the idea has received little support outside of Russia. Analysts said the new Kremlin proposal would elicit little excitement among the G20 members. "This is all in the realm of fantasy," said Sergei Perminov, chief strategist at Rye, Man and Gore. "There was a situation that resembled what they are talking about. It was called the gold standard, and it ended very badly. "Alternatives to the dollar are still hard to find," he said. The Kremlin's call for a common currency is not the first in recent days. Speaking at an economic conference in Astana, Kazakhstan, last week, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed a global currency called the "acmetal" -- a conflation of the words "acme" and "capital." He also suggested that the Eurasian Economic Community, a loose group of five former Soviet republics including Kazakhstan and Russia, adopt a single noncash currency -- the yevraz -- to insulate itself from the global economic crisis. The suggestions received a lukewarm response from Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday. HERSZENHORN reports from Washington in the New York Times Online, on September 19, 2008, 'Gathered in the conference room just off House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s personal suite on the second floor of the Capitol, the Congressional leadership had just received the sobering news Thursday night that America’s economy remained in peril despite a series of sudden interventions by the Federal Reserve.
Senator Christopher J. Dodd met with members of his staff on Friday. He was in the meeting Thursday night when Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke unveiled a plan to use billions in dollars to buy bad debt.
Then the other shoe dropped. Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. told top members of both parties — about to leave Washington to assail one another in a bitter election season — that they had no choice but to pull together and quickly pass legislation providing billions of public dollars to take bad assets off the hands of the nation’s financial institutions.
"Do you know what you are asking me to do?" said Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic majority leader who has struggled all year against concerted Republican opposition, according to multiple participants at the Thursday night session. "It takes me 48 hours to get the Republicans to agree to flush the toilets around here."
At that point, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader who duels constantly with Mr. Reid, reached over to assure his colleague they could work it out. "Harry," Mr. McConnell said, "I think we need to do this, we should try to do this and we can do this."
As Congress waited Friday for details of the plan, Congressional officials said members of both parties remained willing to move ahead despite reservations from the rank-and-file about exposing taxpayers to staggering costs that have yet to be disclosed.
In telephone briefings with lawmakers, Mr. Paulson and the Fed chairman, Ben S. Bernanke, sought to make it clear that the price of doing nothing could be calamitous.
"If we don’t get this, it will be nothing short of a disaster for our markets," Mr. Bernanke told House Republicans in a conference call Friday, according to a detailed account of the call.
At the same time, Democrats sought to make it clear the final proposal had to take care of the general public as well as Wall Street.
Referring to a phone conversation with President Bush early Friday, Ms. Pelosi said: "As I told the president this morning, we are committed to quick, bipartisan action while ensuring that we uphold key principles — insulating Main Street from Wall Street and keeping people in their homes by reducing mortgage foreclosures, restoring market confidence and protecting American taxpayers from incurring hundreds of billions of dollars of debt."
Yet it is evident that sentiments disclosed by the financial officials in the meeting Thursday night and in other briefings have made a strong impression on Congress. And the seriousness with which the administration is approaching the issue was evident in the fact that Mr. Bush for the first time in weeks also telephoned Mr. Reid, with whom he has had a strained relationship, to ask for his help in pushing through legislation.
Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Democrat, said that the Thursday-night session contained not a bit of levity and that the description of the financial predicament made him gulp. "When you get 20 politicians together and no one makes a joke, you know something is going on," he said.
Although Mr. Schumer and others have declined to repeat precisely what they were told by Mr. Paulson and Mr. Bernanke, they said the two men described the financial system as effectively bound in a knot that was being pulled tighter and tighter by the day.
"There was a long pause in the room," Senator Christopher J. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut and chairman of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, said.
In the Republican conference call Friday, Mr. Bernanke sought to remind lawmakers that voters have money at risk, not just Wall Street executives.
"Many of your constituents hold money in money markets — those funds are losing money," he said, according to the account of the call provided by a listener. He blamed the deep problems in the housing market and said that the "critical issue is what do we do about these bad assets clogging up our credit system."
The financial crisis comes at a delicate time for Congress. Lawmakers had been preparing to dispose of a few legislative issues and then adjourn at the end of next week for the elections. But the push for financial legislation has upended the schedule and given the two parties some incentive to work together.
Republicans warned Friday that Democrats should not try to take advantage of the situation, with Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican leader, saying the plan has to be kept "as simple and straightforward as possible."
"Loading it up to score political points or fit a partisan agenda will only delay the economic stability that families, seniors and small businesses deserve," he said.
Some conservatives who had already raised the alarm over federal intervention in the markets remained deeply skeptical of the plan.
"We are being asked to go ‘all in’ with taxpayer dollars, and once our government and the taxpayer is on the hook, there is no fallback option," said Representative Jeb Hensarling of Texas, chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee. "My fear is that taxpayers will be left with the mother of all debts, the federal government becomes the lender and guarantor of last resort and our nation finds itself on the slippery slope to socialism."
Yet Republican leaders appeared determined to go along with the administration plan. "This is a very serious, very unpleasant problem to deal with," said Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, No. 3 in the Senate Republican leadership. "But we must act next week to solve this situation."
In their Friday conference call with Treasury and Fed officials, House Democrats, according to participants, accepted that the bailout was necessary but also faulted the administration for a reckless economic approach that combined deregulation, deficit spending and bad management.a
In the closed-door Thursday night meeting, Democrats sought to make it clear to Republicans that the underlying initiative for the financial rescue was coming from the administration and that it was the White House that owned the proposal.
Participants said Representative Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, the majority leader, was particularly emphatic, noting that the administration was requesting unprecedented action on short notice, effectively telling Congress, "Trust us."'

None of them violent, and in every way legal, yet at the same time, they are easy, actionable, and I believe would bring about positive change. Some of these include:

Vote with your wallet every time you open it. Whenever you spend, you are casting a vote for, or against, the marketing pseudo-reality, the prevailing socioeconomic paradigm, and the status quo. See a company that makes a product and has some kind of ethical core values (Example of an ethics-based company: Newman's Own), buy their products. See RBST-free milks? Buy it. Organic? Buy it. Want to buy hardware? Consider going out of your way to buy from a cooperative (Like Ace Hardware) rather than a megalithic 'big box store'. The "anything for shareholders" paradigm is yesterday's news. The cool thing about America is that the Framers of the Constitution knew this and designed a system which was flexible and could be changed. The corpgov paradigm didn't really hit America until 1913. In February of that year, the Sixteenth Amendment was enacted (passed is debated to this day) and by December 1913, the Bankers had grabbed control vide the "Federal Reserve Act" which had its roots as documented in G. Edward Griffin's most excellent book "Creature from Jekyll Island" Nothing happens by chance...
Participate in the most important part of the political process. No, that's not voting at the polls on election day. Participate passionately in the precinct committee meetings and caucuses in your own precinct or ward.
Invest in yourself and your family. Get an education and learn at least one trade which would be necessary should the world ever slip back toward the 1800's. We're only a terrorist attack on the grid or power/energy distribution infrastructure away from the 1800's anyway. It's just that the 'corpgov' paradigm hasn't got a plan for that, so if it happens, then you need to have a hot backup plan at the ready. The Russians, should they get angry enough, have the capability to launch a preemptive electromagnetic pulse attack on America that would put us at about 1860 overnight. If you don't understand that, you have not been reading very much about how modern warfare can be played out.
Along with an education, invest in things that can produce value: If you buy a home, try to find one where you won't have to grovel to a Homeowners Association for 'permission' to install solar panels, rip off your siding and put in heavier insulation, or put up a wind generator. There are quite literally hundreds of opportunities to lessen your carbon footprint and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. A bloated SUV ain't one of them, and neither is reporting to Condo Nazis. Get cold weather clothing, take up hiking, canning, get in shape, develop a green thumb and commit to producing some small portion of what you eat - event if it's only 5% because in the future that might be the difference between life and death in the future. You just never know about such things. Think about land that can produce something. A hobby where the tools can be applied to a wide range of productive activities (metalworking, for example) and why not build a small green house or do condo farming with potted plants?
Agitate for policies that make sense. Some of my favorite 'causes' are things like a single flat-rate income tax. No sales tax on food or clothing. Barring anyone in public office from holding any form of 'dual citizenship'. I want leaders who have no 'opt-out' option. American first, and only, dammit. Real borders, locking up anyone who hires illegal laborers, and as long as we're at it, ban use of foreign call centers and let's start making products in America again.
Turn off your TV and start retooling your reality filters to capture what's really going on rather than the MainStreamMedia paradigm. Spend at least 15-minutes of quiet time every day just owning your own life - assessing it, dreaming up alternatives for your own future and getting back into an ownership position where YOU are the boss.

A little reading of various conspiracy boards suggests that there might have been some kind of cooperation between a few US alphabet-agencies and other intelligence services around the world, including the KGB which Vlad Putin used to head, and this theory says that an earlier Bush at the CIA might have built an 'exit plan' for the Russian KGB-types during his vice presidential tenure.

When I think about it, that actually could make sense. How could the fall of Russia be coordinated without some pay off to those who could [violently] oppose a planned collapse? Recall George H.W. Bush was head of the CIA long before the breakdown of the Soviet empire. Such contingencies would have had to been obvious to strategic planners.

And, it wouldn't have been a bad plan, either. If you're going to help to facilitate the roll-over of something as big as the former Soviet Union, there would of course be palms to be greased to keep things moving along just so. And George H.W. Bush was VP under Reagan and then President when the Wall in Berlin finally came down, so the timing of this speculation is interesting. If there were to be favors passed around to make sure the rollover of Russia happened smoothly, this would be the platform to manage it from.

Not to sound too conspiratorial here, but now that 'terror' alerts are high (and I expect them to be publicly raised before October 7th -October 2 or 3 when the shorting rules come off would be timely ), one can sit back with a cup of coffee and wonder about whether the recent 'sudden' changes in short-selling rules both here in the US and in the UK will not somehow figure into events yet to come.

Fill a 12-ounce glass with ice. Add vodka, rum and triple sec. Add lime wedge and equal parts of pineapple juice and orange juice. Shake well and serve. Makes 1 serving.

Black-Eyed Susan
Ingredients:
1-1/4 cup Vodka
1-1/4 cup Light rum
3/4 cup Triple sec
1 tblsp fresh Lime juice
4 cups Pineapple juice
4 cups Orange juice
Ice ring with fruits (pineapple, lemon, grapes)
Mixing instructions:
Chill all ingredients. Just before serving combine in a punch bowl. Unmold ice ring and float in bowl. Serve in tall glasses. Makes 10 large servings.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A senior Republican lawmaker said that deteriorating security in Iraq may force the United States to reintroduce the military draft.

"There's not an American ... that doesn't understand what we are engaged in today and what the prospects are for the future," Senator Chuck Hagel told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on post-occupation Iraq.

"Why shouldn't we ask all of our citizens to bear some responsibility and pay some price?" Hagel said, arguing that restoring compulsory military service would force "our citizens to understand the intensity and depth of challenges we face."

The Nebraska Republican added that a draft, which was ended in the early 1970s, would spread the burden of military service in Iraq more equitably among various social strata.

Recently a young man asked for advice about religion. For the benefit of a few like him, I am going to conclude with my reply:

"If I were you, I would not associate with any religious organizations. I would also shift my focus from scripture to your immediate life and your immediate relationship to God. I would try to be silent or take long walks and clear my head. Then I would listen for God speaking to you. In other words, have an immediate relationship with your Creator and focus on improving your life and behavior by bringing more harmony, peace, love and order into it.

You can still read the scriptures for inspiration but let your day be your religion, how you live, how you embody the principles in which you believe. Too much religion seems to remove people from their actual life.

Girls Night Out

The other night, I was invited out for a night with "the girls". I told my husband that I would be home by midnight.

Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went down way to easy. Around 3 AM, a bit blitzed, I headed for home.

Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hall started up and cuckooed 3 times. Quickly, realizing my husband would prbably wake up, I cuckooed another 9 times.

The next morning my husband asked me what time I got in, and I told him, midnight. He didn't seem disturbed at all. Then he said, "We need a new cuckoo clock."

When I asked him why, he said, "Well, last nighjt our clock cuckooed three times, then said, "Oh, shit", cuckooed four more times, cleared it's throat, cuckooed anther three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the cat and farted."

NICK ANDERSON, LA TIMES - The first Republican-linked television ad attacking presumptive Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry depicts him as an old-fashioned liberal who, despite his avowed populism, favors expensive haircuts and designer shirts and owns a 42-foot yacht and several lavish residences... As the 30-second ad flashes photographs of the candidate, boats in a harbor and various pieces of real estate, a narrator says: "Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry. Hairstyle by Christophe's: $75. Designer shirts: $250. Forty-two-foot luxury yacht: $1 million. Four lavish mansions and beachfront estate: Over $30 million." It then shows Kerry with his home-state Democratic colleague Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, as the narrator adds: "Another rich, liberal elitist from Massachusetts who claims he's a man of the people. Priceless."

MICHAEL COLBY, COUNTERPUNCH - If you hear gleeful giggling from behind the curtain shielding the political elites from the mere masses, you're not alone. There's a party going on and we haven't been invited. It's a presidential election party, where the puppeteers of our democracy are celebrating an upcoming election that they can't lose. It's a contest between two of their own. George Bush versus John Kerry is a dream ballot for those whom C. Wright Mills called the "power elite," that tight little club of economic, political and military leaders who truly rule the nation. The power elite doesn't care about political party affiliations. That's child's play. In their view, fools line up to vote while the real players decide who's on the ballot. And for some reason we still refer to the whole charade as democracy. The joke's on you.

Bush v. Kerry is simply nirvana for the bluebloods. As they say in the business world: it's a win-win situation... Before the delusional Democrats out there start peppering me with hostile emails about the absolute necessity of getting "anybody but Bush" in the White House, just stop yourselves long enough to consider these facts: Kerry supported Bush's war on Iraq; Kerry supported Bush's tax cuts; Kerry hasn't proposed one major social or environmental initiative in over 20 years in the U.S. Senate; Kerry hasn't put forward any meaningful policy initiatives in his campaign for the presidency regarding jobs or health care. Kerry's campaign seems to be all about proving that he qualifies as "anybody but Bush." And all that takes is a pulse...

Transexual steals spotlight at Miss Universe-China show

Chen Lili, a 24-year old transsexual from Sichuan Province, was granted an oppotunity to appear at the contest to display her good shape and look...

Though barred from the contest because she was born a man, Chen was given the chance to perform on Sunday and she cut quite a figure, reported Monday's Shanghai Morning Post.

"Chen seemed to outshine all the 37 beauty queen contestants on the stage," the paper said.

Martha Stewart -- Guilty!

Martha Stewart was convicted Friday of obstructing justice and lying to the government about why she unloaded her ImClone stock just before the price plummeted - a verdict that could send her to prison and cripple the homemaking empire built around her vision of gracious living. Her ex-stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, also was found guilty in the stock scandal. Stewart, 62, grimaced and her eyes widened slightly upon hearing the verdict, and she later released a statement maintaining her innocence and promising an appeal. She will be sentenced on June 17th.

Martha Stewart was born Martha Helen Kostyra on August 3, 1941 in New Jersey. She was the first daughter of Eddie and Martha Kostyra. She was born to a large middle class family of Polish heritage. She has a older brother, Eddie. She also has 4 other siblings. When she was born, her family lived in an apartment in a two-family home. They bought a house in Nutley, New Jersey when Martha was three years old. It was a busy household with six kids. Martha's mother cooked and sewed clothes for the family. She saved money by making the childrens' clothing. Martha's parents believed in a strong work ethic.

Martha's mother taught her how to cook. They had large Christmas celebrations and Martha and her mother baked and decorated cookies. Martha also learned the art of canning and preserving at her grandparents' home in Buffalo, New York. She spent some summers there as a child. They taught Martha how to preserve and can vegetables and fruits. These are skills that would prove to be important in her life.

Martha's father, Eddie, was an avid gardener. He shared his gardening skills with Martha. They would work together in the yard and garden. They would plant flowers, fruit trees, and bushes of berries. Their garden grew and evolved over time. Martha learned many of her skills used today from her parents and grandparents.

Martha attended schools in Nutley, New Jersey all the way to college. She was an excellent student. Martha also loved to read. She was active in extracurricular activities as well. She was involved in the school newspaper, the Art Club and several other clubs.

As she came from a large family, her house was always bustling with visiting family and friends. They often entertained and the family would do all the preparations, such as cooking and baking. Unbeknownst to Martha, this was the beginning of her "entertaining" career.

During her high school years, Martha decided to go to New York and try to get modeling jobs. She was hired and eventually was in a TV commerical and several magazines. In addition to modeling, she was still going to high school and she continued to excel in her studies. She was an overachiever. She graduated in the top ten of her high school class and decided to attend Barnard College in New York City.

While attending college, she continued to model. Her majors were history and architectural history. She met her husband, Andy Stewart, while she was attending Barnard College.

Martha wed Andy Stewart in 1961. Martha and her mother made her wedding dress. They lived in an apartment in New York City. It needed work, so Andy and Martha renovated and decorated it together. This was Martha's first real introduction into home decor. In 1965, their only child, Alexis, was born.

After Alexis was born, they decided they should live in a house and make a home for their little family. They bought a one room schoolhouse and renovated it from top to bottom by themselves. They enjoyed the work and the challenges it presented.

For a short time after her modelling career slowed, Martha went to work as a stockbroker. It was during this period in her life that she learned how businesses operate. Again, she was successful and this experience would prove invaluable.

Their next home was in Westport, Connecticut. This is the now famous home on Turkey Hill Road. Well experienced with home renovation, they took this project on with pleasure. Restoring and decorating soon became apparent to Martha that these were her true passions. Andy and Martha landscaped with fruit trees, berry bushes of all varieties, and many vegetable and flower gardens, just like Martha did when she was growing up. They painted the interior and the exterior of the house, too.

During this renovation, Martha decided to try her hand at catering. She always liked entertaining and thought this might be the perfect business for her. She started simply by placing a catering ad in a small local paper and the jobs started coming. Her first official catering job was a wedding. Her business grew as did the publicity for the functions she catered. Martha catered a party for Andy's publishing firm and met many editors and important people. It was during this party that she was offered the opportunity to publish a book on catering.

That book became Entertaining and was published in 1982. It was a bestseller and continues to sell today. She also published two cookbooks as a followup. She started to appear on television and she even hosted her own Thnaksgiving special on public televison. People either loved her or hated her. She fast became known as a lifestyle expert.

She eventually became the spokesperson for K-Mart. She wrote more books. She was becoming a healthy "homemaking" expert. It was during this successful business time her marriage started to suffer. Martha and Andy divorced in 1990. She continued to work hard. She renovated and decorated another house.

She had another goal. She wanted to publish a magazine very much like her books. A magazine that would show women how to entertain and decorate, cook and bake, garden and craft.

In 1990, her dream became a reality. "Martha Stewart Living" made its debut. Women across the country loved it. Martha appeared on the "Today" show and was offered the chance to host her own show. The nation is engaged in a major ongoing debate about why America went to war in Iraq, when Iraq was not an imminent threat, had no nuclear weapons, no persuasive links to Al Qaeda, no connection to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, and no stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction.

Tragically, in making the decision to go to war in Iraq, the Bush administration allowed its wishes, its inclinations, and its passions to alter the state of facts and the evidence of the threat we faced from Iraq............ If he feels that the White House altered the facts, or misused the intelligence, or ignored it and relied on dubious sources in the Iraqi exile community, Tenet should say so, and say it plainly.

It is not sufficient for Tenet to say only, as he did last week to the Senate Intelligence Committee, that we must be patient. When he was appointed Director of Central Intelligence in 1997, Tenet said to President Clinton, "... I have believed that you...and the vice president must be provided with ... complete and objective intelligence. ... We must always be straight and tell you the facts as we know them." The American people and our men and women serving in Iraq deserve the facts and they deserve answers now.......... According to former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill's account in Ron Suskind's book, "The Price of Loyalty," Iraq was on the agenda at the very first meeting of the National Security Council, just 10 days after President Bush's inauguration in 2001. At that meeting, the president quickly--and wrongly--concluded that the U.S. could not do much about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He said we should "pull out of that situation," and then turned to a discussion of "how Iraq is destabilizing the region."

Secretary O'Neill remembers, "Getting Hussein was now the administration's focus. From the start, we were building the case against Hussein and looking at how we could take him out and change Iraq into a new country. And, if we did that, it would solve everything. It was all about finding a way to do it. That was the tone of it--the president saying, 'Fine. Go find me a way to do this.'".......... David Albright, the former weapons inspector with the International Atomic Energy Agency, put it this way: "Leaders will use worst-case assessments that point to nuclear weapons to generate political support because they know people fear nuclear weapons so much."........... Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, a recently retired Air Force intelligence officer who served in the Pentagon during the buildup to the war, said, "It wasn't intelligence--it was propaganda ... they'd take a little bit of intelligence, cherry pick it, make it sound much more exciting, usually by taking it out of context, usually by juxtaposition of two pieces of information that don't belong together."

As it now appears, the Iraqi expatriates who had close ties to the Pentagon and were so eager for the war may well have been the source of the hyped intelligence. They have even begun to brag about it.

The Pentagon's favorite Iraqi dissident, Ahmad Chalabi, is actually proud of what happened. "We are heroes in error," Chalabi recently said. "As far as we're concerned, we've been entirely successful. That tyrant Saddam is gone and the Americans are in Baghdad. What was said before is not important. George Walker Bush / John Forbes Kerry

It seems likely that the President of the United States will be either George Walker Bush, or John Forbes Kerry, both of whom have considerable Yankee ancestry and royal descents. The combined nine royal descents are covered in Gary Boyd Roberts' new book, Royal Descents Of 600 Immigrants. An RD for Laura Bush, through North Carolina landgrave Christopher de Graffenried, is covered as well. Three of President Bush's RD immigrant forebears were non-New Englanders: Robert Livingston the Elder of New York, first lord of Livingston Manor; George Elkington of New Jersey; and Col. Walter Ashton of Virginia.

Senator Kerry's mother was a Forbes whose ancestor, Rev. John Forbes (died 1783), was a noted Anglican clergyman and magistrate in East Florida. Rev. Forbes' wife was Dorothy Murray, daughter of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's matrilineal immigrant ancestors, James Murray of North Carolina and Massachusetts and Barbara Bennet of North Carolina. (Thus Kerry and FDR are fourth cousins twice removed.) The Forbeses, Murrays and Bennets were all of royal descent.

Senator Kerry's mother's mother was Margaret Pyndal Winthrop of the family that founded Massachusetts Bay, a granddaughter of Robert Charles Winthrop, Speaker of the US House of Representatives and a great-grandson himself of Revolutionary statesman James Bowdoin, for whom the college is named. The wife of R.C. Winthrop, Speaker of the House, was the daughter of a Cabot and great- granddaughter of a Higginson and a Pickering of the Boston Brahmin families of those surnames.

Ok this is not earth shattering news, no space info, no intrigue, no NWO, no banksters, not even a politician. Just another hero has passed. After you read everything, I hope you understand the Post.

I remember when people in the entertainment business were such as Red Skelton, John Wayne, Bob Hope, Brig. General Jimmy Stewart who flew bombers over Germany in WWII when he could have gotten out of it and other heros of my generation. Audy Murphy who was a Metal of Honor winner starred in a movie about his WWII story called "To Hell and Back". I remember when TV was clean and pure. Where actors could actually act and many served in some way, shape, or form in WWII, and they all supported their country. I remember when programs on TV were wholesome for the entire family and there were entertainment programs which were very Patriotic on the Fourth of July and you could say Jesus. A time when childrens programs were harmless childrens programs with no agenda other than entertaining kids.

Those days were the last days of innocience in America.

Back to the point of this Post. A friend sent me the email posted below, about a year ago. I posted it before the story on the good Captains' death for reasons you will see. Captain Kangaroo was a hero in every meaning of the word. To me he was first a hero for children. As a child, I had no idea what kind of hero he really was. His message was not one of deceit, trickery, or mind control like you see directed toward children now. He entertained children with simple childish things, promoted morale values, and just was a nice person.

So, it is with a tear in the corner of my eye, that I salute you sir, Sergeant Bob Keeshan, you are in the "Treasure House" way up in the sky.

Ordinary men like you, doing extra ordinary things in war and peace, served as role models for people of my generation and made this country great. It is also the mark of a great hero to dismiss his deeds to praise another as you will see about Lee Marvin. It is very sad that most real heros are gone.

Updated: 1:46 p.m. ET Jan. 23, 2004QUECHEE, Vt. - Bob Keeshan, known to generations of children as TV personality Captain Kangaroo, has died at 76. Keeshan died of a long illness, his family said in a statement.

Keeshan’s “Captain Kangaroo” debuted on CBS television in 1955 and ran for 30 years before moving to public television for six more. The program was wildly popular among children and won six Emmy Awards, three Gabriels and three Peabody Awards.

The format was simple: Each day, Captain Kangaroo, with his sugar-bowl haircut and uniform coat, would wander through his Treasure House, chatting with his good friend Mr. Green Jeans, played by Hugh “Lumpy” Brannum.

He would visit with puppet animals, like Bunny Rabbit, who was scolded for eating too many carrots, and Mr. Moose, who loved to tell knock-knock jokes. A favorite sketch involved Mister Moose dropping ping-pong balls on the Captain's head.

But the show revolved about the grandfatherly Captain Kangaroo, whose name was inspired by the kangaroo pouch-like pockets of the coat Keeshan wore.

“I was impressed with the potential positive relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, so I chose an elderly character,” Keeshan said.

Before portraying the Captain, Keeshan was the first actor to play sidekick Clarabell the Clown on the "Howdy Doody Show."

Keeshan was the author of numerous books, including "Growing Up Happy: Captain Kangaroo Tells Yesterday's Children How To Nurture Their Own" and "Good Morning Captain: 50 Wonderful Years With Bob Keeshan: TV's Captain Kangaroo." Ergo, the N/S axis is no longer at the center of the cone formed by the Sun's arc during daylight. [ Note: all of this indication that the N Pole has moved toward Iceland, an recent tilt. The Sun is rising at 45° from South instead of 60° from South as per Skymap it should, too far north by 15°. Rescue workers abandoned the search for more survivors on Tuesday after the vessel, with a mostly Filipino crew of 30, suddenly capsized a day before. Twelve survived with the other 18 presumed dead. Rocknes' Norwegian owners Jebsen Management AS said the cause of the accident was not known. U.S. Coast Guard officials said the pilot of the plane, bound from Pelee to Windsor, about 35 miles to the northwest, made a frantic radio call for help shortly after taking off. The pilot was experienced with the Cessna Caravan and it is flyable type of weather. There are up to three flights daily between the island and Windsor in the winter, when ice prevents ferries from running. [Note: no known cause of crash.]

Perfect definition. No mistake. I got neighbors out of their houses, and they saw it too. Everyone around here is abuzz. [and from another] At 9,000 feet looking south from the Lincoln National Forest situated in the Sacramento Mountains at 4:45 pm today [Jan 21]. The site was a well defined white circle no yellow or orange or red hue or color at all. Just bright white and in plain daylight situated well above the horizon as the sun was setting behind the mountains overlooking White Sands Missle Range in NM. Looked about double the size of the moon and the site was a full circle (full if you will). Since the moon is out of phase and essentially not visible what we saw had to be your Planet X. Visiblity lasted 3 minutes until cloud cover obscured it. I saw the second sun plain as the nose on my face and this was verified by my fiance who was with me. [and from another] You should see the sunset in Eugene Oregon tonight. It looks like clouds of red dust raining down from puffy white clouds and there is a very strange electric/metallic smell to the air. While the sun was out, I could see it through the clouds. It had a lump to one side.

He said he has been inspecting wells in this county for over twenty years and this is the first time he has seen this happen! [and from another] We got our hands on a 1980 almanac. Then we went to the US Naval Observatory online page http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.html and checked current sunrise and sunset times for our locale (northern Minnesota). US Naval site, no matter what year you type in for any given date has the same sunrise and sunset. The almanac says a consistent 14 minutes earlier for 1980. Can sunise and sunset vary year to year? [Note: the Navy has backadjusted so that their current adjustments do not look peculiar. Frequently noted changes. Where else did the Almanac's now considered a terrorist tool, get their times from if not the Navy, in the past?]

I just came back from the Andes [Jan 20] and the villagers are preparing for the return of what they call Herculobis. The skies are a brilliant red at sunrise and sunset. They are moving to higher elevations and stockpiling food and water. While I was there alot of foreigers in their private jets are landing and staying. They are planning on a long stay. Most of the locals there are paid by them. Some of the roads are becoming impassable because of the quake activity happening now on a steady basis. Santiago Chile was hit by a quake that did some damage but you didn´t hear that here in the USA. [and from another] And another observation from Spain [Jan 19]. The king Juan Carlos (himself) has just paid an official state visit to Chile. Among the different issues of his agenda there was an excursion to the spanish settlement at Antarctica. I work security at one of the major U.S. military bases and recently [Jan 16] there was a rather large meeting regarding emergency services including the Chief of State Patrol, fire services, representives of the Dept. of Labor, and many other federal/state agencies and services. I checked many of these people's ID badges for getting on base, and a few of them were special badges that had the words TOPOFF 2 on them. This is the name of the original TOPOFF exercises. Is there going to be another operation TOPOFF and what does this mean? [Note: TOPOFF was called on May 12, just ahead of the Zeta date of May 15, and involved 100 different agencies in the US and Canada, coast to coast, supposedly terrorism exercises.]

Justices said in the 6-3 ruling that police checkpoint stops, when used to seek information about recent crimes, do not violate the privacy rights of other motorists. Justice Stephen Breyer said that "police appropriately tailored their checkpoint stops to fit important criminal investigatory needs." Three justices, however, expressed concerns that the ruling could open up motorists to police interference without yielding information about crimes.’ [Note: expect roadblocks galore when migration to safe places occurs.]

The US space agency took the decision because, under President Goeorge W Bush´s new space programme, the space shuttle will be retired in 2010. The United States will instead focus on voyages to the Moon and Mars. Flights have been halted since the explosion of the Columbia shuttle nearly a year ago. The telescope has ailing gyroscopes that were to be replaced on the next servicing mission - which has already been delayed by the Columbia accident.’ [Note: the Space Station is damaged by debris, has a leak, and both the station and Hubble will officially die soon so the incoming debris does not have to be admitted.]

While having breakfast this morning [Jan 13] at IHOP 2 local meteoroligists sat at a table next to me. They are our local weather guys. I heard them talking about phone calls coming into the station about what has been showing up on the local webcams, the phone calls are getting pretty heavy and are diverted to a bogus answering machine that never returns your call. Anyway they were talking about how they call the Navy every evening for the sunrise and sunset schedule for the following day. They also were talking how the weather is completly wrong in most parts of the country. Then they said ‘ I wonder how long we have to keep the public in the dark.’ I´m in Portland Oregon. The sation is KGW 8. That´s all I heard Matt and Dave talk about. I do not know what this all means, But from the way they were conversing it sounded like something very bad is coming. Something that they aren´t suppose to talk about. Dave did notice that I was listening to them and they quickly changed the subject to the Packers overtime loss to the Eagles. Then they finished thier coffee and left.

I just check our state wide paper the Oregonian [Jan 13] and I see tommorrow then say 7:49, but it is off from the Farmer’s Almanac by 10-20 mins. The sun didn´t break the peak till well after 8:00AM today. I thought the sunrises were suppose to start getting earlier? They aren´t. They are getting longer. [and from another source] I´ve got the papers from the Oregonian since Nov 6, 2003 hadn´t gotten around to taking them to recycle. Started comparing the weather charts and sunrise charts to the Farmer’s Almanac and found the big difference in time displacement started in Mid-December. My 2004 farmers almanac and the sunrise and sunsets do not match with the Oregoian paper, they are off by 26 mins. [and from another source] The Farmer’s Almanac charts aren´t even coming close with the local papers here in Kansas either. Off by 18 mins. [and from another source] If you look in the 2003 Farmer’s Almanac you´ll find that for today one year ago your sunrise should have been 7:43AM not 7:59AM. One minute before 8:00AM? I still to this day have not seen a sunrise this late. Unless you’re Alaska. Somehow the earth is out of place as though we tilted more or something.

Suddenly Rush Limbaugh Is Concerned About Conspiracies

Nationally syndicated radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has seen the light, or maybe felt the heat. In either case, he suddenly realizes the consequences of living in a society where government agencies have unfettered access to personal information and where individuals have little or no constitutional protections. Welcome back, Rush.

For years, Limbaugh has impugned, denigrated, and chastised any caller who dared bring up the subject of federal encroachment on individual liberties, calling them "conspiracy nuts," or worse. He has had little patience for anyone who wanted to suggest that both political parties are trampling the U.S. Constitution and helping to create a gargantuan federal oligarchy at the expense of The Bill of Rights and personal freedoms. Suddenly, however, he is screaming that he is the victim of a (eeh-gads) "conspiracy."

The issue at hand is a criminal investigation into whether Limbaugh, who has been addicted to pain killers for years, violated the law by "doctor shopping" in an illegal bid to obtain a continuing supply of powerful drugs such as OxyContin, Hydrocodone, and Xanax. To obtain the needed evidence, authorities seized, by court order, Limbaugh's medical records. Rush is furious! He maintains his medical records should remain private and that he is being singled out because he is a popular "conservative."

Rush's inconsistency is massive! For years, his beloved Republican Party has collaborated with liberal Democrats to eviscerate The Bill of Rights, and he has fully supported them! Patriot Acts I & II, the SS-style Department of Homeland Security and dozens of other measures have come into reality with Rush Limbaugh's complete and enthusiastic support!

As a result of Limbaugh's (and other popular "conservatives") endorsement, personal freedoms affirmed under The Bill of Rights have all but vanquished. Virtually any American citizen, not just those targeted by a "left wing conspiracy," is capable of being victimized by this new federal monstrosity.

So, where was Rush Limbaugh when this "New World Order" (George Bush, Sr.) was being constructed? He was either ignoring it or demonizing those who opposed it.

If Rush was not concerned about people losing their 4th Amendment rights under The Patriot Act, why should people now be concerned about the loss of privacy regarding his medical records? What's good for the common goose should be good for the celebrated gander.

The fact is, no American citizen's medical records are private anymore. Neither are our financial records, our phone calls, our emails, or our travel records. The feds have absolute and total access to virtually every piece of information about every single one of us!

Furthermore, in the grand scheme of things, the loss of free speech (via phone taps, etc.) is far more egregious than Limbaugh's medical records. Historically, next to the preciousness of life, the freedom of speech has been held in the highest esteem by the laws of this country. No more!

Today, America's federal laws more resemble those of Stalin's, Hitler's, or Mao's than they do those put in place by Washington, Jefferson, and Madison. And, until now, Rush Limbaugh has not objected.

Suddenly, it's different! Now, Rush Limbaugh believes in conspiracies and is opposed to granting the federal government (or even state government, as in his case) access to personal information. It's amazing how one can change his tune when it's his own bacon in the fire!

Unfortunately, it appears that the Limbaugh saga is a microcosm of America as a whole. It seems that until the American people are personally affected by the tyrannical laws that we allow our politicians (including Republicans) to pass, we seem oblivious to their danger.

However, we should all realize that once we allow tyranny to take root, nothing short of revolution will stop it, and that what happened to Rush Limbaugh (and worse) will happen to every one of us. Therefore, how long will "conservatives" continue to support a Republican Party that facilitates such tyranny? Until they join Rush in jail, I suppose.

All 148 Aboard Killed in Egypt Jet Crash

TIKRIT, Iraq -- On mud-spattered computer screens in their Humvees, American soldiers scan digital street maps, monitor enemy positions, zoom in on individual buildings through satellite imagery and download instructions from commanders.

Back on base, senior officers watch raids unfold on large screens showing real-time footage from aerial drones and displaying maps with moving icons for ground and air forces. Their locations are tracked by global positioning satellites.

The two dozen components making up this high-tech digital warfare system are known as Army Battle Command Systems. The technologies, originally designed for battlefield combat involving tanks and helicopters, now are being adapted for hunting rebel leaders and trailing street fighters.

The technology has allowed commanders to plan complicated raids and organize battle gear and hundreds of soldiers within two hours. That speed, they say, played an important part in capturing Saddam Hussein and other fugitives.

The Army's 4th Infantry Division, headquartered in one of Saddam's palace complexes in his hometown beside the muddy Tigris River, is the only unit outfitted with the system, and it is being used in combat for the first time.

"No longer do you have guys on a map putting little stickers where things are at," said Capt. Lou Morales, a division training officer. "It's digitally done. ... It allows commanders to move more rapidly, more decisively, more violently."Link found at >>Full story...

As The World Turns in 2004

2004 is the year of speculation, innovation, conjecture, and new alliances. Spiritually the world splits into several levels - reality and anti-reality, gravity and anti-gravity, matter and anti-matter. Shifts of consciousness will gradually take people towards new interests and other dimensions. A new cosmology dawns. Teaching will be more interesting via the web, which transforms into an omni net. Families and homes will take on new meanings, as clans will gather and start moving around.

People will learn to go within and to become one with the web of life. Heads of states will roll worldwide. August and September is a potentially very dangerous and volatile time with a bunch of planets in the pan Arabian Mars point in Virgo challenged by transcending Pluto. I anticipate the Middle East to blow up just in time for the US “election”. I predicted Bush stays in the White House – not sure though he will finish his 2nd term..

While the inevitable and nefarious trend to a one-world government continues via wars, deceptions, and atrocities - with either Bush and/or Clintons - a sub-culture of new international thinkers, artists, and leaders emerges elsewhere. Children will become family leaders; dedication to belief systems, philosophy, arts, and humanities will expand, as it usually does in times of distress. The internet will be used in different ways. Independently produced movies, music, and books will be seen on new gadget screens.

People will start to question the matrix of life and the sense of their lives. The trend for economic success will be to become self-sufficient and to re-organize into smaller and livable communities. It will behoove people to reach out to one another and to make friends all across the globe. Sign by sign, planet by planet, you adapt to these times in the following ways:

ARIES

2004 starts at warp speed for you. Place yourself ahead of change; persevere! Don't waste a minute; promote yourself. Begin a new dawn, yet be aware that Saturn tests you at times while Uranus trails you in your house of undoing, forcing you into mutable mysticism. Home front undergoes changes all year long. Mondo Quake in Pacific Northwest?

Geologists have discovered evidence of a massively powerful earthquake zone beneath the Pacific Northwest just offshore from the Seattle area. They made the discovery by piecing together ancient accounts of a giant Japanese tsunami and a computer simulation of a huge tremblor in the 17th century.

Thought to be inactive, the earthquake zone runs 600 miles up the Pacific Coast from Northern California to southern British Columbia. It appears to be subject to monster quakes every 500 years.

... the paper's authors present a solid case that a magnitude-9 quake on Tuesday, January 26, 1700, sent a 15-foot tsunami into Japan about 14 hours later...

"It flooded farmed fields, ruined salt kilns, damaged fishermen's shacks, ascended a castle moat, entered a government warehouse, drove people to high ground, and probably ran 2 kilometers up a river," the paper says. "It wrecked houses not only by flooding them but also by starting a fire. It contained multiple waves that range in reported time from midnight until the following noon. The tsunami initiated a nautical accident in which were lost two crew members and tons of rice."

... Atwood said the link was provided by stands of dead trees along the coast that drowned in seawater between August 1699 and January 1700. Their time of death was determined by the trees' last growth ring.

... During the quake, the sea floor stretched 60 feet and dropped 5 feet. "It was a sudden lowering of a sizeable chunk of the ocean floor," Atwood said, "The ocean rushed in, and that's what created the tsunami."

... Atwood said the geological record indicates the fault ruptures about once every 500 years and is capable of unleashing "truly giant earthquakes."

He said only three quakes this century compare in magnitude -- a 9.0 quake in Kamchatka in 1952, a 9.5 quake in Chile in 1960 and a 9.2 tremblor in Alaska in 1964.

"The 1906 earthquake (in San Francisco) was a very big earthquake, but this thing in 1700 was in a different class," said Atwood.

He said the fault, which is long and slopes gently under the North American tectonic plate, is characterized by tremors that last for several minutes. "It is very challenging for building design," he said. "Most earthquakes don't last that long. We have no experience for building to withstand it." ...

Our professors have joked about it. We joke about it with our friends. But it's just a joke, a relic from the "bad old days." The draft is gone forever, isn't it? Think again.

Become acquainted with the Universal National Service Act of 2003, H.R. 163, introduced on January 7, 2003. This act, can be found on the website of the U.S. Congress at (http://www.congress.gov).

This act as seen on the website states: Universal National Service Act of 2003

Title: A bill to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

It declares that it is the obligation of every U.S. citizen, and every other person residing in the United States, between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a two-year period of national service, unless exempted, either as a member of an active or reserve component of the armed forces or in a civilian capacity that promotes national defense. Requires induction into national service by the President. Sets forth provisions governing: (1) induction deferments, postponements, and exemptions, including exemption of a conscientious objector from military service that includes combatant training; and (2) discharge following national service. Amends the Military Selective Service Act to authorize the military registration of females.

Let's take a look at the contentions in this bill for a moment. First, we notice that it becomes the "obligation" of every person in the United States between 18 and 26 to serve two years in the military. "Obligation," means no choice in the matter. In addition, the Military Selective Service Act is amended to include women. It would appear that this also extends to non-citizens and immigrants, based on the phrase, "every other person residing in the United States." ...

H.R. 163 also teams with its sister bill, S. 89. These are two separate bills, written with the exact same lingo. The difference? One sits with the House, the other with the Senate. ...

When will this happen? Both bills are on the floor of the Congress, waiting to be picked up and voted on. It is unlikely that we will see this before the election in 2004. No president seriously seeking reelection would dare try to impose a mandatory draft and military service. However, once Bush ends up with a second term, he is basically free to do anything he wants. Look for this in 2005, according to the Selective Service System fiscal year 2004 plan (sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html).

President Bush is spending $28 million (see plans 1-3 at the above website for dollar amounts) to have the Selective Service system ready to report to him on March 31, 2005, and then to have the system ready for activation within 75 days. This would make the approximated date of the return of the draft June 15, 2005. All of these numbers can be figured out by reading the above link. ...
