Dear Tashi and Keith,
I disagree with the Buddhists. IGNORANCE isn't the problem--you can always be informed. But the problem is STUPIDITY. Practically I define it as "willful ignorance" (usually "in flagrant disregard of other's rights") in addition to its etymology. This makes the problem more tractable, imho--but the strength of will in the majority of our species is lamentably low. Unless, that is, something fixes our attention. But we are so easily distracted as a species, AND refuse to think in terms of the long-term. Try this experiment: ask random individuals, "Does the Earth go around the sun, or the sun go around the Earth?" Try not to be shocked or too disappointed!
